Talented Thai artist provides peek inside the secret world of miniature people【Photos】

We never stop talking about the different ways that people pay tribute to Studio Ghibli. Artists and designers create some amazing work that stems from the themes and ideas that the famous Japanese animation studio put on the silver screen.

One photographer from Thailand was struck with Ghibli-fluence after watching The Secret World of Arrietty and wondered, “What would life be like from the perspective of miniature people?” Take a look after the jump to see the secret world of tiny people not named Arrietty.

Poy, the Thai designer and photographer, tries to construct his photos around surrealistic ideas he dreams up. In this particular series of photos, you can definitely see his playful nature engaging with The Secret World of Arrietty. His miniature figures interact with a number of different tools, objects, and foods to demonstrate what really small people could be doing if they lived in our world. Each of his pictures offers us a fantastic view of everyday life from an entirely new perspective.

▼ Hot peppers infused with gas make excellent hot air pepper balloons. Hopefully the fiery spices from the peppers don’t set off any explosions!

▼ Someone’s got to do it!

▼ We were wondering why our pills didn’t seem to have any affect.

▼ All together now, on three! One…two…

▼ Couldn’t you have drilled in a straighter line?

▼ Ah, that’s how they do it!

▼ “This is Professor X…I need Wolverine!”

▼ Stop playing and get to work, you two!

▼ Nice day for fishing, eh Joe?

▼ We’re makin’em hot!

▼ This is definitely how coins are cut.

▼ The perfect way to get ready for movie night.

After looking at all of the wonderful pictures, a tiny part of us believes that just maybe the Borrowers do exist and they are the reason that our stuff goes missing all the time. Be sure to check out more of Poy’s work on his Facebook page and let us know if you ever find evidence of the existence of tiny people!

Kindergartener brings a surprise guest to school for the best show and tell ever

school cat 1

Young children are full of surprises, but sometimes the biggest surprise comes out of their backpacks. Meet Zen and the newest “student” at a Thai kindergarten, his cat.

It must be difficult to be a kindergarten teacher, since the little children don’t quite have the concepts of right and wrong figured out yet. Sometimes their cute little minds don’t understand the chaos they are about to cause. Other times their antics bring a smile to all our faces, like this boy named Zen who took his cat to school one day.

The story is that, when Zen was getting ready to go to school in the morning, his pet cat jumped into his backpack as he was closing it up. The furry feline friend didn’t make a peep as Zen traveled all the way to school — the bus driver never had a clue there was an extra passenger!

▼ “You thought Stitch was inside…”

▼ “…surprise!”

When they made it to school, the cat popped out of the bag ready for a whole day of learning. The teacher thought at first that it was just a kitten, but soon realized a full-grown cat was attending her class.

▼ “Aren’t you a little old for kindergarten?”

What made the story even better was that Zen claimed his kitty really wanted to come to study. You can’t fault a cat for just wanting to learn or a kid for wanting to spend the day with his wonderful pet!

As long as everyone is doing their part, we don’t think a couple of family pets would alter the learning environment too much. Heck, it might even be an improvement! Perhaps this kindergarten class should run a pilot program where a different pet comes to school every day. If nothing else, at least they will get some fantastic pictures and laughs from the experience!

Thai family throws extravagant wedding for their three-year-old twins【Video】

Growing up with brothers and sisters can be bad enough sometimes, but what if “playing nice” meant having to tie the knot? If you’re a twin in Thailand, it could happen!

It’s not uncommon to hear stories of twins who develop the same interests or can somehow feel a deeper connection despite being separated hundreds of miles apart. In Thailand, however, this belief goes one step further when it comes to twins of the opposite sex, who are believed to share an even deeper connection as lovers who were unable to be together in their past lives.

That’s why one family in Nakhonsawan Province decided that marrying their three-year-old twins would be the best way to help them ward off future misfortune.

The twins were married at home on November 14, and the groom, Petai Angdechawat, gave his sister, Pailin, a dowry of gold and cash worth three million baht (approximately US$83,680).

Here’s a video of the “happy couple”:

Soon after the nuptials took place, their adorable wedding photo shoot began making the rounds on Twitter, and quickly went viral.

According to cultural superstition, twins of the opposite sex who are unable to show the blessing of their union in front of the Gods are at risk of dying young. Only days prior to the wedding of the Angdechawat twins, another ceremony between four-year-old twins in Chai Nat Province also made headlines, but with much less pomp. For those wondering, these ceremonies were only for display and their marriages were not officially registered.

For those of you feeling disgruntled because your relatives won’t stop nagging you about when you’re going to get married over holiday dinners, just be thankful they didn’t try to marry you off when you were a toddler.

New multiple choice answer sheet is the anti-cheating gift from the teacher gods

cheating 2

Multiple choice tests were already annoying enough; let’s see the Scantron machine scan this answer sheet.

Multiple choice tests have always been a double-edged sword. On one hand, they are the quickest way to mark and evaluate a ton of students. On the other hand, if a student doesn’t know the answer, they end up guessing, which often doesn’t tell you if the students have learned anything or not.

A lot of teachers will introduce strategies to prevent students from guessing. Answers like, “all of the above”, or “none of the above” and marks deducted for wrong answers are a good way to weed out the students who have studied from the ones who haven’t. One problem continues to present itself though, a long sheet of paper with fill -n-the-bubble answers makes it quite easy for the less honest students to cheat.

▼ Don’t cheat Naruto! For the love of all that is ninja, don’t cheat!!!

cheating 4YouTube/Xbox666

That is why a university in Bangkok, Thailand has created a new way of organizing a multiple choice testing sheet to prevent cheating. Good luck taking answers from your neighbor now!

The circular format of the answer sheet makes it much harder to see where you are on the test, but also makes it nigh impossible for any classmate trying to peak over your shoulder for an answer.

Reaction from the Internet seems to be united in one comment, “This will probably prevent cheating, but seems like it would be really annoying to take this test.” It might be more difficult on the students and harder to mark, but if it keeps test takers honest, maybe these extra steps are worth it in the end.

Video of a man riding a bicycle made to look like a white horse is both beautiful and bizarre

Why is this young man riding the horse bicycle around Bangkok? We have no idea, but we can’t stop watching this video!

YouTube is full of the wonderful, the bizarre, and, quite often, the wonderfully bizarre. Today, we have something that definitely fits in the last category: a Thai man riding around Bangkok on a bicycle that’s been modified to look like a white horse.

▼ Magical!

The video, which appeared at the end of December, is nearly five minutes of Karnchanit Posawat, a Thai man who studied film and video at King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, riding the bicycle. It’s not clear who actually made the horse-bike, but we assume it was built specifically for the video.

The video is surprisingly simple—it’s literally just footage of Karnchanit riding on the street and then riding in a circle in the center of Bangkok—but we have to say that it looks pretty good, aside from some pretty bad shaking in the first half.

The reactions of people on the street pretty well sum up our confusion and bemusement upon seeing the video, but at the same time we have to admit that it’s almost hypnotic! And since the other videos Karnchanit have uploaded include some performance art recordings and a video about Buddhism, we kind of suspect there might be some deeper meaning intended by the video.

Then again, it could just be a silly video about a man riding his horse bicycle around Bangkok…

Peace Oriental Teahouse offers a serene environment to enjoy some of the best teas from Japan, China, and Taiwan.

In Bangkok, Thailand, among the bars, clubs, and other fine dining establishments in and around the Ekkamai area, owner Teerachai Limpapaitoon has created a simple space to relax and enjoy freshly brewed Asian teas with Peace Oriental Teahouse.

It’s a small shop that holds no more than 30 patrons at a time, with Japanese floor-style seating and benches on the first floor, and a quiet reading and study space on the second.

Perhaps best known for its matcha and gyokuro teas, the teahouse, which is about to celebrate its first anniversary, also prepares fine Chinese oolong teas, and offers an ever-changing seasonal menu. Each pot of tea or sampling course runs from THB 180-450 (approximately USD 5.00-12.50).

Although the main draw of the shop is the staff’s diverse knowledge of tea and an unrivaled selection of the best brews Asia has to offer, Peace also serves all-natural koicha and matcha ice cream blends. They’ve done limited runs of Japanese and Thai traditional sweets along with Japanese tea ceremony exhibitions as well.

So far, both customers and critic reviews of the shop have been positive, and the teahouse has even appeared on Thai TV.

For those that can’t make the trip to experience a real Chinese or Japanese teahouse in person but live in or will be visiting the Bangkok area, this may be the next best thing.

Tourist ends up in hospital after being “kissed” by a snake in Thailand【Video】

What was supposed to be a fun reptile show in Phuket, Thailand, soon turned gruesome after a Chinese woman was attacked by one of the snakes in it.

Tourists flock to Thailand’s numerous animal zoo and conservation facilities, despite warnings from animal welfare activists that, in many of these facilities, animals are kept in run-down, unsuitable enclosures and overexposed to visitors.

Phuket Snake Farm, located near Simon Cabaret in Patong, is just one of the many centers that has been accused of animal cruelty, offering visitors a chance to see, touch, and take photos with a variety of snakes and other animals.

Professional snake handlers put on a show for visitors five times a day, combining comedy and survival tactics for what to do should you encounter a snake in the wild. Part of the show’s big finale is the “death kiss”, where one of the handlers risks kissing a cobra.

Unfortunately, those survival skills didn’t come in handy for one Chinese woman in the audience, who received an unexpected “death kiss” from a python during her visit to the show on January 9.

Though the bite drew blood and was obviously painful, luckily the species of python that bit her wasn’t venomous.

Following the incident, the woman was taken to Phuket International Hospital, where her wounds were cleaned and stitched up.

▼ Ouch.

Unlike the tale of the princess and the toad, however, no handsome prince appeared to whisk her away after her reptilian encounter. Still, you could say this story has somewhat of a happy ending, as the victim was awarded over US$3,000 in restitution from the company that owns the farm upon being discharged.

The helpful pooch in this commercial from Thailand proves that dogs really are man’s best friend.

When we see the words “Thai advertisement”, we immediately grab a box of tissues and prepare for some therapeutic crying. Finally, though, we’ve found one where we’re not only treated to a fairy tale ending, but none of the characters had to tragically sacrifice themselves mid-way through.

Noodle stall in Thailand is dishing out some mighty fine treats for your eyes and your taste buds

We’ll take whatever this guy is serving.

Restaurants are, notoriously, one of the hardest businesses to keep running. A lot of the overhead costs are taken out when you decide to open a noodle stall on the street, but a good entrepreneur will use any available tactic to increase their sales. So, thought one clever restaurateur, why not pair hot and spicy dishes with equally hot and spicy men?

▼ This looks good!

▼ This looks good too!

Situated near Rangsit University in Thailand, it’s very easy to see why customers flock to this humble noodle stall. Jad Noodles, as it’s called, is a tasty little noodle shop run by Kritsada Saekwang and his equally tasty help.

▼ Hold up that sign a little higher, maybe…

▼ Splash that water everywhere.

▼ …drool…

You probably don’t get built like this by just slinging noodles all day, so it’s no surprise that the workers here have other jobs as personal trainers at the university and model part-time as well. While the shop is well-known for their eye-candy, their food is no slouch either. Make sure you try their Jad Seafood Tom Yum — it will knock your shirt off!

▼ Yes, we’ll take an order of tom with a side of yum.

▼ Look at that fiery red soup! Make sure you order a literal tall drink of water from the ones running the stall.

Jad Noodles is open every evening from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m., so if you’re in the area, be sure to head over and give them a try. The rest of us can check out their Facebook page for more information and pictures. There are lots of pictures…of food too, if that’s what you are looking for.

Thailand has the second-highest obesity rate in south-east Asia, largely due to the fact that its delicious cuisine can be rather greasy.

Since people in Thailand are unlikely to change the food they eat, the Thai Health Promotion Foundation and BBDO Bangkok decided to tackle how they eat their food. (We first saw this campaign over at Adweek.)

And so the “AbsorbPlate” was born.

The design of the plate was inspired by the surface of a sponge and contains hundreds of tiny holes to allow oil to slip away from a meal and be absorbed at the bottom.

The promotional video claims the plate can soak up about 7 ml of oil, or 30 calories on average, from each meal.

“I want to be part of your world too!” Thai cosplayer amazes internet as male Ariel 【Pics】

There ain’t nothing Little about this Mermaid.

We’ve seen gender-bent illustrations of Disney characters before, but what would these princesses-turned-princes look like in real life? And, more importantly, would they be hot?

Thankfully Thai cosplayer JiakiDarkness is here to answer these questions for us… with a heart-throbbing yes! These photos may be a little old, but we don’t think anyone is going to complain about having to take another look at his interpretation of a male Ariel from Disney’s The Little Mermaid.

▼ “Betcha on land, they understand.
Bet they don’t reprimand their daughters… er, uh, sons I mean!”

▼ I’d really like to know how this picture was taken,
though I’m guessing the reality isn’t nearly as cool as the final image.

It seems like JiakiDarkness has an affinity for mermaids, since he cosplayed not only as Ariel, but also Wakasa – the male mermaid from the Japanese manga Orenchi no Furo Jijo.

▼ That awkward moment when you just want to take a bath,
but there’s a rainbow mermaid sparkling in your tub.

▼ “Come on in, the water’s nice and hot.”

▼ Don’t you try and seduce me with your silly rubber
ducky shenanigans, Mr. Bathroom Mermaid!

▼ Ah, don’t look at me like that! It’s… getting harder… to resist….

▼ Oh, who am I kidding?! I can’t say no to that piercing gaze any longer!

▼ Yes, I’d be happy to lie on the rocks and stare at the sky all day. Swoon.

If you want to see more of JiakiDarkness’s captivating cosplay, then check out the rest of his photos over at his Facebook page.

Courageous cat takes a ride on the back of a scooter【Video】

Screen shot 2016-07-20 at 10.02.08 AM

It’s hard to tell in this video whether this cat riding a scooter is enjoying it or hanging on for dear life, but it seems to be doing okay!

In the video, which is said to have been filmed in Thailand, we can see a black and white cat standing on its hind paws clinging onto the back of the driver’s shirt.

I’ve heard of the cat in the hat but never the cat on the bike – and by the shock of the voices of the people shooting this footage it seems as if it is not really common practice in Thailand either.

▼ Check out the video below.

At first, the cat appears to be stuck in the arms-wide-spread position too afraid to move but then suddenly turns around to look at the camera as if to say, “What? Haven’t you ever seen a cat riding a bike before?”

▼ Just another day taking my cat for a spin

Screen shot 2016-07-20 at 10.03.23 AM

One witty viewer of the video commented that this is “definitely illegal” because the “cat isn’t wearing a helmet”.

I don’t think the poor thing can even see where it’s going – just a blind joy ride. Not only is the cat trying to avoid falling off a moving vehicle, it is also battling the elements on a rainy day without an umbrella. At least the man driving the scooter is protecting the cat from the full force of the wind and rain.

▼ “Yes, I’m a cat. And I’m riding a scooter.”

Screen shot 2016-07-20 at 10.03.08 AM

But of course this is all conjecture – the cat may have ridden the scooter a million times before and has grown up riding motorbikes! One thing we can say with confidence is that this cat sure has puurfect balance.

What are your thoughts? Do you think it is safe for a cat to be riding a scooter?

Story of a homeless man whose life changes after he returns a lost wallet will warm your heart

Wallet

For this fortunate man, honesty has paid off in the most beautiful way.

Thailand has pulled at our heart strings with touching advertisements and tear-jerking commercials in the past, but now there’s a real-life tale emerging from the country that’s warming our hearts and making us reach for the tissues.

The story begins with a 45-year-old homeless man called Woralop, who had nothing but 20 baht (US$0.58) to his name. One day, he saw a business man drop a wallet, and when he picked it up, he found it was filled with credit and ID cards and about 20,000 baht (US$577). Unable to find the owner again in the crowd, he instead went to the local police station, and despite being virtually penniless, he handed the wallet in with everything intact so it could be returned to the person who had dropped it.

The wallet did make it safely back to its rightful owner, a 30-year-old factory owner by the name of Nitty Pongkriangyos, whose girlfriend shared the above picture of the two on Facebook, along with their story. Nitty decided to return the good deed with another act of kindness, by offering Woralop a job at the company.

According to Nitty, this type of honesty is exactly what they look for in an employee, so Woralop is now a part of their team, employed with a good salary, and he’s even been provided with free accommodation in their company housing.

The heartwarming story has made news around the country, with Woralop making several television appearances alongside his grateful employer and girlfriend.

According to media reports, Woralop is grateful for the opportunity to change his life and is happy to sleep in a clean bed. Nitty and his girlfriend are also happy to be giving back to the kind man, whose honesty has brightened the lives of everyone around him, and is now touching hearts around the world and restoring our faith in humanity.

Now, where are those tissues?

Chart showing Thailand’s 18 genders challenges the idea that there is only “male” and “female”

$
0
0

Is 18 genders too many? Or too few?

Thailand is often thought of as the transgender capital of the world, both because of the high rate of sex change surgeries that take place there, their high quality compared to other countries, and the fact that transgender people are usually treated better than in other places.

But Thailand’s transgender acceptance goes far beyond just just the people who have undergone surgery. Thailand legally acknowledges a “third gender,” and within the larger culture, there are 18 genders that are part of the common language.

This can be a shocking fact to some, as evidenced by Japanese Twitter user @yg_1223 who posted a chart of Thailand’s 18 genders and was not alone in their surprise (chart translation below).

18 Genders
Not just men and women!

(Straight) Male
A man who likes women.

(Straight) Female
A woman who likes men.

Tom
A woman who dresses like a man and likes women or Dees.

Dee
A woman who likes manly women or Toms.

Tom Gay
A woman who likes women, Toms, and Dees.

Tom Gay King
A manly Tom who likes Toms.

Bi(sexual)
A woman who likes bisexuals, Toms, lesbians, and men.

Boat
A man who likes women, Gay Kings, and Gay Queens (does not include Ladyboys).

Gay Queen
A womanly man who likes men.

Gay King
A manly man who likes men.

Tom Gay Two-Way
A Tom who can be both a Tom Gay King or Tom Gay Queen.

Tom Gay Queen
A womanly Tom who likes Toms.

Lesbian
A woman who likes women.

Kathoey/Ladyboy
A man who wants to be a woman.

Adam
A man who likes Toms.

Angee
A Kathoey who likes Toms.

Cherry
A woman who likes gay men and Kathoey.

Samyaan
A woman who likes Toms, lesbians, and women, and can also be any of them.

“Now wait just a minute,” some of you might be saying. “Two genders, sure. Three genders, yeah, maybe. But eighteen?! Come on, that has to be a joke, right?”

Actually, Thailand has a long history of multiple genders. Toms, Dees, and Kathoey are just as much a part of Thailand’s gender identity culture as gay, lesbian, and trans people are in the West.

If this all still seems crazy, it’s important to keep in mind that “gender identity” is different from “biological sex.” Just like many countries in the world have come to accept that it’s possible for someone to be born a man but identify as a woman (or the other way around), we’re learning that there is a whole spectrum of other genders that people can identify as.

While the average Thai person may not be able to rattle off all 18 genders and their definitions, for the people who do identify as a “Boat” or “Kathoey” or “Tom Gay Two-Way,” having a label to call their own probably means the world to them.

All in all, it may be hard to remember all of the combinations and interactions, but that just shows how nuanced and deep human sexuality is, and how much more we have to learn about something that seems so “obvious.”

▼ I mean, Pokémon would be pretty boring if there were just two types,
and the same thing goes for human beings too!

Here’s how Japanese Twitter responded:

“It’s kind of cool, like a bunch of different magic guilds: priest, druid, black mage, white mage, magician, etc.”
“Well I learned something new today: I am a Boat.”
“The world is a big place.”
“There’s too many. I lost track after four.”
“Actually, rather than Thailand having too many genders, I think Japan has too few.”

“Hey cutie, you have a little smidge on your cheek. Here, I’ll get it for me.”

Valentine’s Day can be a lonely day for anyone who doesn’t have a special someone to give their organs and poop to. But one Thai photographer is showing that even if you’re alone on Valentine’s Day, you can still show off how much you love the most important person in your life: yourself.

His name is Assarin Saelim and he goes by Rainyokohama55 on his Facebook page where he shows off how to make one person look just as romantic as two:

▼ Aw, isn’t that cute! She’s drawing on his fa-
Oh. Wow. Some of these will require a bit of flexibility, I see.

▼ …make that a lot of flexibility.

▼ It might not be as romantic doing a “follow me” photo yourself,
but it’s less stressful than a “drag me” photo for sure.

▼ Get a room, you two!
Er… you one!

▼ Again, some of the body contortions are quite impressive.
Phone in the mouth is a nice touch.

▼ I’m so glad we’re going on this trip together, honey.
Just you, me, and my desktop background.

▼ “Aw baby, just let me sleep a little bit longer.”
“Sir, I’m going to have to ask you to leave.”

If you want to see the rest of the hilarious photos, then be sure to check out the official Facebook page where there are plenty more.

And if you’re in the mood for even more behind-the-scenes shots that show the ridiculous truth about what’s really going on in beautifully-staged cosplay photos, then no worries, we’ve got you covered.

World’s smelliest fruit in Kit Kat form? Thailand makes bid for durian-flavoured Kit Kats

Ah, the heady aromas of chocolate and sweaty feet may finally come together!

With an interest in Kit Kats that verges on addiction, we here at RocketNews24 consider ourselves very lucky to have access to the ever-changing world of limited edition Kit Kats in Japan. Soon though, we may have to go further afield than the local convenience store or Chocolatory boutique to get our exotic chocolate flavour fix.

In a bid to boost tourism, Thailand has suggested to Kit Kat a number of local delicacies they believe would make for snack-tacular tastes as perfect as their beaches, including tamarind, mangosteen, and durian.

▼ Tamarinds (left) are a sweet and sour fruit, and mangosteens (right)
are a sweet and tangy fruit. Durians, however, have a certain defining feature….

Wikipedia/Mlvalentin, Wikipedia/مانفی (edited by RocketNews24)

Durians are a fruit that, despite being known as “the king of fruits” in southeat Asia, has just as many enemies as fans.

Though considered an expensive delicacy in much of Asia, it has an extremely pungent smell that is often described as similar to sweaty feet or decay. It’s a powerful odour that has been known to kick up a stink at airports or on trains.

▼ The “king of fruits” in all of its slug-like glory.
Be thankful smell-o-vision never took off!

Wikipedia/مانفی

The Thai minister for Tourism and Sports, Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul, told reporters from Thailand’s Daily News that Kit Kat manufacturer Nestlé is currently discussing the feasibility of turning the fruit into the next Kit Kat taste sensation.

▼ A mockup of what the world may be in for.
Is mankind truly ready for this?

While Durian-flavoured Kit Kats would probably not be the strangest Kit Kat creation ever (that honour would probably go to either Kit Kat pizza or Kit Kat sushi), if they can somehow recreate the same intense olfactory experience, then it would most likely go down as the smelliest Kit Kat creation yet.

New bizarre Thai trend has men undergoing laser treatment to bleach their penis

And customers are reportedly rather satisfied with the results.

Pale white skin is considered beautiful in Japan, one of the beauty fads that Westerners can’t quite comprehend. Whether it be tanning or whitening, some people take skin tones and complexion rather seriously.

A hospital in Bangkok might have just taken it to another level by offering genital bleaching procedures to customers. While such services are already available to women, this one’s a first for men.

▼ The procedure employs the same pigmentation laser equipment
used in bleaching women’s genitalia.

Demand for the treatment has surged ever since it was introduced last July in Lelux Hospital, with the facility taking up to 100 clients a month, or around four clients a day.

Quick and painless, the bleaching treatment requires advanced booking and reportedly costs $650 for five sessions. Depending on the individual and the extent of whitening desired, more than five sessions may be required.

When you think about it, anal and vaginal whitening have been around for ages, so naturally it’s only a matter of time before the penis gets the same amount of attention. Before long, tanning dongs might become a thing too one day.

“I’ve got a surprise in my pants. Guess what color it is.”

Health authorities have warned that the procedure may cause extensive skin irritation, allergies, or inflammation, though no issues have been raised since its implementation.

Fancy a surprise for your significant other? Then perhaps a trip to the Lelux Hospital might be in order, though there’s no telling if other clinics have already started the service to satisfy the surging demand. Or you could always get some tips from apprentice geisha on how to achieve beautiful skin.
